Over the years, we've shared moments of excitement, laughter, happy tears and unforgettable memories. We've fastened jackets before nervous first photographs, adjusted hats before proud walks down the aisle, and watched confidence quietly blossom.

The Story Behind This Project
At Chequers Boutique, we've always believed that occasion wear is about more than beautiful clothes.
It's about helping every woman discover the confidence to look and feel her very best during life's most memorable moments.
Every woman who walks through our doors is celebrating a milestone, embracing a new beginning, or preparing for one of life's unforgettable moments. Behind every dress, every hat and every carefully chosen accessory is a unique story.
When the opportunity arose to collaborate with Janey Kay Photography on this confidence-building project, it felt like a natural partnership. Together, we wanted to celebrate real women—not professional models, but women with remarkable journeys, each bringing their own strength, courage and personality.
Throughout the day there was laughter, nervous excitement, friendship and moments of genuine pride. We adjusted hats, fastened jackets, shared encouraging words and watched confidence grow with every photograph.
These are not simply portraits of beautiful outfits. They are portraits of women discovering, or rediscovering, the confidence that has always been within them.
We are incredibly proud to have played a small part in each of these stories and hope that, as you read them, you'll be reminded that confidence isn't about perfection—it's about embracing who you are.

Meet the Incredible Women Behind the Story
Every woman featured here stepped outside her comfort zone to take part in this confidence-building experience. Each has her own story, her own journey and her own reason for saying "yes." These are their stories, told in their own words.
Elegance, Strength & Grace
Like every woman who took part in this project, Katrina brought with her a unique story of courage, resilience and hope.
These are her words...
” The last 14 years of my life have been both the best and the worst years of my life !
Back in 2004 my mum watched a programme about adoption and after calling the number at the end of the show it lead to finding her birth mother and my maternal grandmother which was a miracle as she was 88 yrs of age and had terminal ovarian cancer. Our lives changed in such a profound way, meeting this amazing woman who suddenly had a reason to fight on and she lived for another six years.
Within six months of meeting her mum my mum suffered a heart attack. She survived but was never the same, this was the second cruel blow and my mum had breast cancer when she was 38, I was only 14 at the time and she was given a year to live, she was a single parent. My mums a tough cookie and beat that one but her heart condition was serious.
In 2005 I met Nick, the love of my life, we married two years later and he has been my rock , for the first time I felt grounded and secure. But in 2010, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I guess I must have inherited my mum and nans toughness because I wasn’t going to let it beat me, and so far so good! I live my life to the full whilst supporting and looking after everyone else. It takes its toll on your life, your marriage and your mental state.
Nan, mum and my stepdad who then was developing severe dementia all lived in a tiny two bed flat but for a long time they were happy .
As time passed they all deteriorated , my Nan went into a home, she died a few weeks later, the cancer finally beat her. Mum passed away two years ago. I don’t have any brothers, sisters or my own children. So as much as my life is full of really good times and enriching moments and I’m still very happy with a man I love very much, my life often feels empty and sad.
The words Katrina carries with her every day...
"live your life to the full now, you’ve had a lot of difficult stuff to deal with so get out there , move on , put the past behind you, work less, enjoy life to the full, it’s very short and it goes very quickly! "
Taking part in the fashion show was a wonderful experience for me. I've also lived with body dysmorphia for most of my life, so while I enjoy taking part in these events, looking back at photographs has always been much harder because I'm so critical of myself. xxx
Meeting Katrina reminded me that confidence isn't measured by what we see in the mirror. It's found in the courage to keep moving forward, to embrace life's next chapter and to keep smiling through life's challenges. It was an honour to share a small part of Katrina's journey, and I'm so grateful she trusted us with her story.

Finding Her Voice Again
Every woman who joined this project arrived with her own story. Some had faced illness, others loss, and some had spent years forgetting just how remarkable they truly were. Rach's journey is one of rebuilding confidence, rediscovering her love of music and finding the courage to step back into the spotlight.
In her own words…
"My confidence was rock bottom After being in a difficult marriage for over 16 years"
I had suffered both emotionally and physically during this time. Janey suggested I come for some photographs and I was flattered to say the least but at the same time quietly terrified. However, I decided to go ahead …
"In my early years I was a singer performer on stage but that all stopped when I was married."
Janey captured some amazing photography of me musically and it helped me gain the confidence after my divorce to go out and gain a degree within creative music and production! This time 7 years ago I could only of dreamt of this …
Going on from this I achieved the catwalk which was amazing. I met some wonderful ladies … Janey is a truly inspirational lady and has a talent for capturing the natural women with her excellent photography and also helping all different kinds of ladies with the confidence that they truly deserve … if you are that person lacking in confidence I would highly recommend either a photo shoot or a catwalk or both !
It has helped me so much and I thank you for that x ”
Listening to Rach's story reminded me that confidence can be rebuilt, even after years of believing you've lost it. Watching her rediscover her passion for music, step onto the catwalk and smile with genuine confidence was incredibly inspiring. It was an honour to meet Nikki and to share a small part of her journey.

Rediscovering Herself
Every woman who joined this project arrived with a different story. Some had overcome illness, others loss, and some had simply forgotten who they were beneath the responsibilities of everyday life. This lady's journey is about rediscovering herself, finding her confidence again and embracing a brand new chapter.
She shared this with us…
"My first meeting with Janey was for some boudoir photographs as a present for my now ex-husband after 30 years of marriage"
By the time my photoshoot had finished, I realised they were actually for me—to help me feel good about myself."
"Often in our everyday lives you forget that you are a real person and often lose who you are…"
"Meeting Janey gave me back my confidence to step outside my comfort zone and rediscover who I was. Back then I wasn't a confident person and I was on the eve of so much change.
I am now a stronger woman who has dealt with so much over the last few years. My journey introduced me to incredible women, many of whom had faced challenges far greater than my own. Seeing their courage reminded me just how precious life is.
As I move into this new chapter of my life, I want to inspire other women to believe in themselves. No matter your age, you can follow your dreams, become who you want to be and never give up. We are all beautiful from the inside out.
The finale of this journey was the fashion show with such inspiring women—not professional models, but everyday ladies who took the opportunity to support one another. Most of us had never even met before that day, yet together we found the confidence to shine."
Listening to Maggie"s story reminded me that confidence can be rediscovered at any stage of life. Watching her embrace a new chapter with such courage and determination was incredibly inspiring. It was an honour to meet her and to share a small part of her journey.

Beauty Begins with Believing in Yourself
Every woman who took part in this project arrived with her own doubts, hopes and reasons for saying yes. Sandy's story reminded me that confidence isn't about dress size or age—it's about giving yourself permission to believe in your own worth.
She shared this with us…
"When I was first asked to take part in the catwalk, I said yes—but changed my mind at least three times. I was a nervous wreck, but I wanted to do it for me.
I've always struggled with my confidence. I did when I was young and slim, and even more now that I'm middle-aged and have gained weight. I was always putting myself down.
I was determined that this time would be different.
Do you know what? I absolutely loved it.
Janey and all the wonderful ladies gave me the boost I needed. I walked the catwalk with my head held high, I enjoyed every moment, and for the first time in a long time I felt happy and attractive.
We all had such a fun day, and I'm so pleased I did it.
To any woman who struggles with confidence like I did, I'd simply say this—give yourself the chance. Push yourself to do it.
You won't regret it."
Meeting Sandy reminded me how often we compare ourselves to other women instead of recognising our own beauty. Watching her step onto the catwalk with growing confidence was a wonderful reminder that true elegance comes from believing in yourself, not from perfection.

The Beauty of Laughter
Some women inspire us with their strength, others with their courage. Julie reminded me that laughter can be just as powerful. Behind every joke was a woman who, like so many of us, struggled to see herself the way everyone else did.
This is Julie's story…
"I'd stopped smoking, which in itself was a huge achievement… but, and it's a big fat 'but', I'd also gained more pounds than several kilos of lard!"
When I look in the mirror, I can find fault with almost everything—my body, my face and all my features.
The few qualities I do see are my laughter, my love and my friendships, and for those I feel truly blessed.
When I look at this photograph now, I don't just see the woman I spent years criticising. I remember how I got here in the first place—through friendship, kindness and the love of a wonderful group of people I'd never even met before, yet who felt like friends from the very beginning.
Those memories make me smile every time I look at this picture."
Meeting Julie reminded me that confidence isn't about never having doubts. It's about finding people who help you laugh a little louder, smile a little brighter and see yourself through kinder eyes. Julie brought so much warmth and humour to this project, and it was impossible not to smile when she was around.

The Moments In Between
Before every photograph came laughter, encouragement, cups of tea, deep breaths and new friendships. These are the moments that turned strangers into friends and helped confidence quietly begin to grow.
Confidence Has No Age
Some women spend years believing they aren't confident, only to discover that confidence has been quietly growing all along. This lady reminded me that it's never too late to surprise yourself, embrace new experiences and discover strengths you never realised you had.
This was her journey…
"I wanted to take part in the fashion show because, in my fifties, I'm more confident than I've ever been".
I know I'm quite pretty, but standing in front of strangers is something I would never have done in my twenties or thirties. I'm loud—but that's often how I hide my shyness. It sounds contradictory, but I've always hidden behind the brash version of myself.
I moved to the area two years ago and didn't know anyone. When your friends tell you that you're beautiful and strong, you sometimes think they're just being kind. But stepping forward to take part in the show alongside complete strangers made me realise that maybe they were right.
From the moment I walked into Chequers Boutique, Debbie made me feel like a friend. Janey, Debbie and everyone involved in the show welcomed me so warmly, and pushing myself to do something completely outside my comfort zone turned out to be one of the best things I've ever done."
Listening to Vanessa's story reminded me that confidence isn't always loud. Sometimes the people who appear the most outgoing are quietly overcoming their own doubts. Watching her step onto the catwalk with such joy, energy and confidence was a privilege, and seeing her truly believe in herself was inspiring.
And I don't think anyone who saw Vanessa on that catwalk will ever forget the energy and joy she brought to every step.

Growing Stronger with Every Step
Confidence isn't always something we find once and keep forever. Sometimes it's something we choose to build, one challenge at a time. Steph's story is a reminder that every step outside our comfort zone helps us see ourselves a little differently.
She shared this with us…
"I've been lucky enough to work with Janey on several photoshoots over the years, beginning with a boudoir session that helped boost my confidence".
Like many women, I've struggled with body confidence, and Janey has always been a wonderful source of encouragement. So when she asked me to take part in the fashion show, I jumped at the chance.
Every time I push beyond my comfort zone, I grow a little stronger. Taking part in this project, alongside such an inspiring group of women, gave me an enormous boost to my confidence, and
I can't thank them all enough."
Meeting Steph reminded me that confidence is a journey, not a destination. It grows every time we challenge ourselves, every time we say "yes" to something that scares us, and every time we allow others to encourage us along the way. Watching Steph support the other women while quietly continuing her own journey was truly inspiring.

Strength Isn't Always Confidence
It's easy to look at someone and assume they have endless confidence. But one of the things this project taught me is that we never truly know what someone is feeling inside. Vonnie's story is a reminder that being strong doesn't always mean believing in yourself.
She shared this with us…
"Well... where do I start?
I first met Janey through my daughter Steph. She had very little confidence and Janey did so much to help her
that when I had the opportunity to work with her myself, I jumped at the chance.
I'm a strong person, but being strong doesn't always mean being confident.
I've spent years doubting myself—telling myself I wasn't good enough, that I'd got something wrong, that I looked wrong, was too fat, too old or too flabby.
When I was invited to take part in the fashion show, I hadn't met any of the other ladies before and I was incredibly nervous.
But from the moment we arrived, everyone made me feel so welcome.
Sometimes you simply have to feel the fear...
"And do it anyway."
Meeting Vonnie reminded me that confidence isn't something you can judge from the outside. Some of the strongest women are still fighting battles with self-belief that nobody else can see. Watching Vonnie step onto the catwalk with such courage was a reminder that confidence isn't the absence of fear—it's choosing to move forward despite it.
Feel the fear... and do it anyway. I think that's a message every woman can take away from this project.

The Catwalk That Changed More Than Confidence
What happened on that catwalk lasted only a few minutes. The confidence it gave these women will last a lifetime.
Seeing Herself Through Kinder Eyes
Many of us carry the words spoken to us years ago, often long after everyone else has forgotten them. Sophie's story is a reminder that confidence isn't about becoming someone different—it's about learning to see yourself with kinder eyes.
This is the story she chose to share…
"I first met Janey when I answered an advert for a photoshoot, just as I was beginning to explore modelling. We laughed our way through that first shoot and, somewhere along the way, I realised something I had never believed before... I actually looked okay.
Having been bullied throughout school because of the way I looked—tall, gangly, wearing glasses and feeling different.
It took me well into my twenties to realise how much those experiences had affected my confidence.
Since then, I've taken part in more photoshoots and catwalks with Janey. I still wouldn't say I'm as confident as I'd like to be—I'm still working on that—but my self-esteem is stronger than it has ever been.
Working in the NHS isn't the most glamorous job, so it's wonderful to have the opportunity to dress up, feel feminine and spend time with such an encouraging group of women. Behind the scenes there's so much laughter, kindness and support. In a world where women can be so quick to criticise themselves and each other, it's refreshing to be surrounded by women who do nothing but lift each other up.
I'll always be grateful to Janey for taking a chance on me, and for introducing me to so many wonderful women along the way."
Sophie's story reminded me how powerful kindness can be. A few encouraging words, a little belief from someone else and the support of other women can slowly replace years of self-doubt. Watching Sophie grow in confidence has been a beautiful reminder that we're often far kinder to others than we are to ourselves.
Sometimes all it takes is one person to believe in you—until you begin to believe in yourself.

"It's Never Too Late to Say Yes"
One of the things I loved most about this project was seeing families share the experience together. We had Steph and her mum, Vonnie, and we also had Sophie and her mum, Kate. Watching mothers and daughters encourage one another was incredibly special, and it reminded us that confidence has no age limit. Kate shared this with us…
"My daughter Sophie persuaded me to take part. At first, the thought of walking the catwalk was terrifying, and it took a lot of convincing before I finally thought, 'What the hell?' and decided to give it a go.
I'm so glad I did.
After two knee replacements and several serious illnesses, I'd lost a lot of my confidence and really needed something to lift my spirits. The whole experience was wonderful. I had so much fun, met some lovely ladies and left with a smile on my face.
"I can't wait to do it again!"
Kate reminded me that courage doesn't have to be loud. Sometimes it's simply saying "yes" to something that scares you. Watching her step onto the catwalk with her daughter nearby, supporting and encouraging one another, was a wonderful reminder that confidence can inspire the people we love just as much as it transforms ourselves.
Sometimes the bravest decision is simply deciding to give it a go.

Confidence Has No Age
It's easy to assume that confidence comes naturally to younger women, but Kaylee's story reminds us that self-doubt doesn't disappear simply because someone appears confident on the outside. Confidence is something we all have to build, whatever our age. Kaylee shared this with us…
"Although my mum, Debbie from Chequers Boutique, introduced me to this wonderful project, taking part was still a huge step outside my comfort zone.
Standing in front of cameras and walking a catwalk wasn't something that came naturally to me, and I know many of the other ladies felt exactly the same.
From the very beginning it became clear that this wasn't just about putting on a fashion show. It was about helping every woman leave feeling more confident, happier in herself and, above all, having fun.
That's exactly what happened for me. The experience gave me a real confidence boost, helped me relax, enjoy the moment and even look forward to seeing the photographs afterwards—which, for me, was a huge achievement.
For that,
"I'll always be grateful."
Watching Kaylee reminded me that confidence has nothing to do with age, appearance or how others see us. Every woman, whatever stage of life she's in, has moments of self-doubt. Seeing Kaylee grow in confidence throughout the day was another reminder that believing in yourself is something we all continue to learn.
Confidence doesn't come with age—it comes from having the courage to keep saying yes to new experiences.

The Heart Behind the Scenes
Not everyone who helped make this day so special walked the catwalk. Some worked quietly behind the scenes, making sure every lady felt relaxed, looked amazing and was ready to shine. Chelsee was one of those people.
"I love working behind the scenes because…"
"I love working behind the scenes because I enjoy helping the ladies get ready and seeing their faces when they're all dressed up, laughing and enjoying themselves.
These fashion shows and photoshoots make me incredibly proud to do the job I do.
The ladies make every event worthwhile, and it's impossible to have a bad day when you're surrounded by such a wonderful group of people.
I also love working alongside my mum, Debbie, helping each lady find the perfect outfit and seeing them discover their dream Mother of the Bride or Mother of the Groom look.
"Watching their confidence grow throughout the day is the best part of it all."
People often see the finished photographs or the ladies walking confidently down the catwalk, but they don't always see the care, teamwork and kindness happening behind the scenes. Chelsee is a huge part of that. Her calm nature, endless patience and genuine love for helping others make every event feel relaxed, welcoming and fun.
Confidence doesn't just grow on the catwalk—it begins in the dressing room, with someone who believes in you.
"As her mum, seeing the care, kindness and pride Chelsee brings to every event makes me incredibly proud. She doesn't seek the spotlight, but she's one of the reasons these ladies leave with such happy memories."

The Sound Behind the Stories
Every special day depends on people working quietly behind the scenes, bringing everything together without ever asking for the spotlight. Vikki was one of those people. While the ladies found their confidence on the catwalk, Vikki helped create the atmosphere that made every moment feel so special.
"Music and technology have always felt like home to me. Put the two together and you have sound engineering.
first discovered my passion when I was seventeen during my first year at college. At the time, I never imagined it would become both a hobby and a career that I truly loved.
Now, at twenty-two and in my final year at university, I've had the opportunity to work with some incredible people and exciting events. One day I hope to share my own sound with the world.
Being part of this project reminded me why I love what I do.
Watching everyone enjoy themselves and helping create such a positive atmosphere made it a day I'll always remember."
Not every story is told on the catwalk. Some are created quietly behind the scenes, through dedication, talent and a willingness to help others shine. Vikki's professionalism, warmth and enthusiasm helped make the day everything we hoped it would be, and we're so grateful she was part of it.

The Heart of Chequers Boutique
"Why I Do What I Do"
Throughout this project, you've met some incredible women. Each one arrived with her own story, her own worries and her own reasons for saying yes.
Now I'd like to share a little of mine.
I've always believed that occasion wear is about so much more than finding the perfect outfit.
One of the greatest joys of owning Chequers Boutique is welcoming women into the boutique who aren't quite sure what they're looking for. Many arrive feeling uncertain about what suits them, worried about their body shape or lacking confidence.
There is nothing more rewarding than helping them discover an outfit that makes them smile, stand a little taller and see themselves in a completely different light.
Over the years I've realised that the fashion industry doesn't always reflect the women I meet every day. Mannequins, brochures and advertising often show one version of beauty, yet the women who walk through my door come in every shape, size and stage of life.
They have stories.
They have families.
They have challenges.
And every single one of them deserves to feel beautiful.
Like many of the ladies you've met on these pages, I've had my own health challenges. They changed my perspective on what really matters. Things that once seemed so important gradually became less significant, and I learnt that confidence doesn't come from trying to be perfect—it comes from accepting who you are.
This project reminded me why I love what I do.
It wasn't simply about beautiful dresses, photographs or a fashion show.
It was about watching women encourage one another, laugh together, step outside their comfort zones and leave believing in themselves just a little more than when they arrived.
That is something I'll never forget.
If there is one thing I hope every woman takes away from these stories, it's this...
Never underestimate yourself.
You are far stronger, far more beautiful and far more capable than you probably realise.
